Ask a Therapist: Homemade Thickener Recipe

04 January 2020 Admin General Media

Hi Lori,

I just completed your course “Feeding Therapy: A Sensory Motor Approach” and I had a question about your thickening recipe. Could you give me additional information on this as I have a child that I think would greatly benefit! Thanks

Hi, Thank you for your email.  I would be happy to share the recipe (see below). However, with all the “talk” on the Feeding and Swallowing list serve, I am very conservative about using thickeners and would prefer to thicken naturally if possible. The general consensus is to use rice cereal (especially with preemies) to thicken formula. With older children I would thin out baby fruits, use nectar, or make a smoothie rather than use a thickener. If you have any other questions, please feel free to email me directly.

Best,

Homemade Thickener:
3 teaspons xanthan gum
8 ounces water

Place in a container with a lid and shake very well. Let sit, and shake again to dissolve any clumps.
