Help Your Child to Fight Sensory Integration Issue
‘Sensory Integration’ refers to a process by which our central nervous system receives a stimuli in terms of sense, sends and processes then in brain and acts accordingly as behavioural response via the motor nervous system. No matter what you are doing, reading a book, playing video game or chatting with friends, every action needs to integrate the senses and to process and to turn them in appropriate motor responses. ‘Sensory Processing Disorder’ is known as the condition in which the nervous system cannot process the stimuli to turn them into social behaviour. It is hypothesized that a neurological blockage causes the senses do not get to the centre, so that motor responses could not be organized properly, leading to a condition where patient finds it difficult to perform everyday tasks. Recent studies are showing that at least 1 child in every 6 children is facing this issue that they can be called having significant sensory processing issues. Children affected by this disorder mostly have problem in social interactions, they do not like to visit noisy or congested places with loud sounds or they can grow too abundant to control. Asperger’s syndrome is one kind of sensory integration issue, in which the child cannot socialize or communicate properly or cannot use the imagination skill, due to delay in development of basic skills. This disorder is mainly identified in children; however, it can affect adults too. Parents, who are having doubt about the wellness of their child, must diagnose them as early as possible in the childhood. Symptoms of Sensory Integration Issues: To carry forward with the treatment, one first needs to understand the symptoms. They are as follows.
- Difficulty can be seen with single or multiple senses, such as- hearing, touching etc. Hypo or Hypersensitivity may take place in adverse conditions.
- Some children may show some special behaviour like vomiting when scolded or not feeling anything in extreme heat or cold.
- Extreme sensitivity to fear, high pitch voice or loud sound can be seen.
- Problem in interaction with strangers is a very notifiable thing.
Currently available treatments: A child with sensory issues can be intelligent to extreme or even can be gifted. But families, having children with the disorder finds it hard to get help. As, till now, sensory integration issue is not recognized in medical terms. However, 6 major therapies are available for sensory processing disorder. 1. Auditory Integration Therapy: Sensory issues are all about the condition where due to a blockage, the brain cannot organize or process the stimulus. Auditory Integration Therapy offers a revolutionised technique to bring the patient under special noises and specific stimuli in terms of different sounds with variable wavelength. The therapist conducts the therapy with a CD full of special made sounds and help the patient’s nervous system to start processing those. 2. Wilbarger Brushing Protocol: Sometimes in this disorder, the child cannot process the stimuli for touch sensation. In this therapy, the skin or a part of body of the child is brushed with a special brush to help the nervous system to take up the sensation. 3. Weighted Blanket: Children with deep pressure problem often are provided this therapy, to help them with the ability to focus. 4. Trampolines, rocking toys: These accessories are effective on children with hypo or hypersensitivity issues. Any activity with movement is effective on them. 5. Regulating the Nervous system: Childs with this disorder are often treated by manipulating and pulling on a joint that acts to reset the nervous control to help them in regulating it. 6. Sensory fidget bag: A bag full with the child’s favourite things can help him to focus. This therapy is effective with asperger’s syndrome patients.
